For some, it’s about budget; for others, it’s all about flexibility and ease. Let me share my experience so you can choose the best way.
There are four ways to get to this renowned site: by bus, private transfer, tour, or rental car.
My Chichen Itza adventure was with a group tour – the easiest and most convenient choice for a solo traveler. It even included stops at a cenote and the charming colonial town of Valladolid.

How to get to Chichen Itza from Playa Del Carmen by bus?
If you want to get to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen but don’t want to break the bank, the ADO bus is a great option!
For just $30 USD round trip, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the Yucatan on your way to one of the country’s most iconic archeological sites. I’m used to paying about $1 USD for the chicken bus in Central America, so this price was a bit shocking.
The ADO bus departs daily at 8:17 am from the ADO station on 5th Avenue and is scheduled to arrive at Chichen Itza around 12:17 pm. That will give you four hours to explore the ruins before catching the return bus, which leaves at 4 pm and is scheduled to arrive in Playa del Carmen around 8 pm.
There is only one bus, so buy your tickets in advance if you can, and set alarms so you don’t miss it!
Pros and cons of buses
The pros of taking the bus to Chichen Itza are that it is the cheapest option and great for budget travelers. The cons are that there are limited buses, so you have to plan your day around the bus schedule, and it takes longer than a private transfer or self-driving, with about 7-8 hours of sitting on the bus.
Some travelers even stay overnight in Vallodid and catch the colectivo to Chichen Itza and back. These depart as early as 7 am and only take about 45 minutes to reach Chichen Itza, so you can get more time without the crowds and heat this way.
I’ve been known to take the most cost-effective option during my travels – I even traveled all the way from El Salvador to Honduras via chicken buses – but I decided to take a tour to Chichen Itza instead.

How long is the bus ride from Playa del Carmen to Chichen-Itza?
The bus journey from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza takes approximately 3.5-4 hours each way, a notably longer duration than the 2.5-hour timeframe when driving independently or hiring a private driver.

If time is of the essence, consider alternative transportation methods to reach Chichen Itza more swiftly.

Alternatively, you can hop off on a bus to Valladolid Yucatan. It is advisable to stay here for a night before heading to Chichen Itza on the next morning. You can also enjoy interacting with the locals of this small city situated right in the heart of the peninsula.
You can also take a halt in Valladolid. As many as 5 buses ply between Chichen Itza and Valladolid in a day and 4 buses between Valladolid to Chichen Itza daily. In order to stay update and avoid any confusion, you must also check the ADO bus website for full time-table. You can also take one of the several colectivo vans which that run daily from Valladolid to Chichen Itza.
You can find these near the main bus station in Valladolid. Just ask a local for direction. These are faster and slightly cheaper. The only drawback of boarding a colectivo is that they move only when all seats fill up. Much like many places in North East India. Here is a secret travel tip: Reach here early morning because there are more number of passengers which means that the seats tend to fill up way faster.
How to get to Chichen Itza from Playa Del Carmen by taxi?
I don’t recommend getting to Chichen Itza by taxi. While some taxi drivers may be willing to make the journey, you’ll need to negotiate the price, which will be expensive. You should expect a taxi will cost $150 one-way, plus you have to consider waiting time if you expect them to wait for you.
Instead of a taxi, I recommend arranging a private transfer with a reputable company. Here’s why:

For travelers to Mexico who don’t mind driving and like freedom and flexibility, renting a car is one of the best ways to get to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen.
While I didn’t drive in Mexico, I rented a car in El Salvador with friends and had a blast exploring the country that way. It’s nice to have a car when you want to get off the beaten path a bit.
The drive to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen takes just under 2.5 hours. It’s recommended to use a GPS for this route. You’ll probably pay about $60-70 USD daily for your rental car, plus about $25-40 USD per gas tank.
The fastest route is to take the 305 Highway to the 180 Highway, which includes toll roads and costs about 344 pesos each way (about $20 USD). It’s important to bring pesos with you, as credit cards and USD are not accepted.
Alternatively, there is a slower road to Chichen Itza that is free, but it will add 30 minutes to the drive.
Another route is to take the 307 Highway to Tulum, drive to Vallodid, and then take the 180 Highway from Vallodid to Chichen Itza.
If you want to save money, take the toll roads on the way there and the free small-town roads on the way back – and add as many detours as you want!
Pros and cons of renting a car to reach Chichen Itza
Renting a car to get to Chichen Itza has some pros and cons. The pros are the flexibility and freedom it offers and the ability to add as many detours as you like. The cons are the rental costs and tolls that it requires and the potential for parking fees.
You can easily hire a tour guide at Chichen Itza (if you want to) for 1000 MXN per group.

Finally, Yokdzonot Cenote is only 24 minutes away. It’s easy to get to and is a great spot for a quick swim.

The awe-inspiring Mayan ruins, combined with the area’s stunning natural beauty, make it a must-see destination. You also have the chance to explore the nearby cenotes, which offer unique experiences that you won’t find anywhere else.
