WHAT IS THE BEST SHOE for trekking? How to identify what shoes should I buy for trekking? These are some of the questions my readers inundate me with, apart from, of course the suggestions for best camera, stay options and destinations.  I recently tried Wildcraft’s newly launched Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes. Here is my review of the same.

When PATA, Nepal chapter invited me to International Travel Bloggers and Media Conference, I was asked to choose between Culture or Adventure for Media trips organized by them. I readily chose Adventure. I had not done a real trek after the successful completion of the difficult Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal in October 2015 and the easy day trek to Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan in August 2016. My old trekking shoes had given way and I was contemplating about which shoes I should try next. The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft caught my attention. I shared its details with an adventure sports expert friend of mine and she readily asked me to go for it. I did and here is what I found:

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft is Sturdy and stylish:

The first thing that impresses about the Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes is its bulky and macho appearance. It’s stylish and a head turner. When I went to Wildcraft’s Connaught Place (New Delhi) store, they showed me 2 colors- Brown, Black and Dark Blue. I instantly chose the brown one which complemented the rough terrains I usually trek on. I realized it was a good choice when people later complimented me for the look of the shoe. It’s hard to ignore it.

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft comes with great traction and grip.

I chose Poonhill Trek in Nepal. The terrain is uneven with harsh ascends and descends. On day 2 of the Poonhill trek, I managed to walk 7500 steps, including around 4000 steep stairs, most of it ascending. I trekked for 11 hours on Day 2. On a total I managed to trek upto 60 kms in 4 days. If it was not for the Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes it would have been mammoth task for me. It was still a strenuous trek, made a little easy by the choice of shoes I made. The 6mm thick lugs helped me in ground traction.

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft kept me stable and protected:

During the Poonhill Trek, I trekked on uneven surfaces, often stumbling on loose rocks. I also encountered nasty leeches (on my arms). The design of the shoes perhaps protected my legs from leeches. The tongue and collar of the shoes covered my ankle and beyond. The nylon shank made sure that the shoes didn’t bend on rough surfaces. The rubber toe minimized the impact when legs hit the ground. I have trekked using other shoes and I could see the difference.

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft is waterproof:

The Poonhill Trek was the perfect trek to test the shoes for its claim of being waterproof. On my previous treks I have tried the so called waterproof shoes and was disappointed. The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes delighted me by staying true to its claims. On most of the days during the Poonhill trek, I came across voluptuous water streams and even cattle dung. There was no option but to walk over it on foot. During the Everest Base Camp Trek, I was wearing a popular trekking shoe by other brand. It claimed to be waterproof but on ‘wet days’, I did have to keep my shoes and socks for drying at the end of the day. I was amazed that the Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes didn’t allow a single drop of water to seep in owing to the bellow tongue and waterproof membrane up to 80mm height (first eyelet level)

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft is comfortable:

Throughout the 4 days strenuous Poonhill Trek, I never felt any discomfort due to the shoes. It snugly fit in. The CMEVA midsole provided ample cushioning and shock absorption. The moulded insocks kept the shoes anti-microbial. The shoes were also breathable and are thus anti-odour.  Despite its bulky size, the shoe doesn’t hamper the trekking experience. In fact the design aids trekking.

The Bottomline:

I have been trekking across India, Nepal and Bhutan since year 2012. During this thrilling journey, I have tried many shoes and trekking gears. The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes is undoubtedly the best shoe I have tried so far. As a blogger, it is my responsibility to stay true to my readers and give them the right advice. I was thinking hard to find any flaws in the shoes but I failed. The experience at Poonhill Trek and pleasant results of my new shoes are fueling in me the desire to attempt more treks this year. Possibly I will go back to the high altitude treks. (I have done high altitude treks like Everest Base Camp in Nepal and Roopkund trek in Uttarakhand, India)

  8. You have mentioned important features of these pair of shoes. The shoes look great, sturdy, and have an excellent quality. They are a good investment and practical. I would also prefer to buy hiking shoes that are waterproof. I would definitely check out this brand and suggest to my friends.

  9. Trekking and Hiking needs good shoes as all depends on how we walk along the rough paths. Wildcraft shoes looks strong and sturdy. As I have done trekking before but in future when I will go for it then definitely look for Wildcraft shoes. Also it offers choices in colors.

  10. These look and sound like a really great hiking show. Supportive but supple – perfect for all terrains and good quality. I’ll remember Wildcraft next time I’m getting new hiking shoes.

  11. Oh those boots look great! And what an epic adventure you’ve taken them on. So very jealous! It’s such a pleasure when you find a pair of boots that just work well for you. Look forward to seeing you take these boots on more adventures.

  12. Planning a trek soon and this article came in at the right time. Thanks for this review, really gives a perspective on what works and what doesn’t. They look sturdy as well as aesthetically good. Looking forward to reading your Nepal experiences in detail 🙂

  13. The right hiking boots are not just a luxury, they are a necessity for anyone who truly wants to enjoy a hike. The wrong boots can cause discomfort and if you are in pain the entire hike, how are you going to enjoy the hike itself. Thanks for the review and I will look into these next time I am looking for a new pair.

  14. Good review. Sounds like you put them through the paces. I like a high amount of arch support and stabilization to keep me from pronating. I also have a wide foot and need a wide toe box. I have had good luck with hiking boots meeting these requirements where other shoes (I’m looking at you Nike) don’t seem to be designed for my personal needs. I am also a huge fan of grippy hiking boots. The last thing I want is a slip or fall.

  15. The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes look like a great option. I will try a pair of these on next time I’m at the hiking boot store. It’s good they walk well on uneven surfaces this is a problem I find with other shoes, that it can be difficult.

As a person who loves to spend time in nature and enjoy hiking like you do, I agree that the choice of footwear is extremely important to the whole experience. It is always good to read a thorough review of a product like this done by a fellow experienced hiker as this is always more credible. Thank you for this information and I will be sure to check these out when the time comes for me to have new footwear for the trails.

Getting the right shoes for hiking is so important. Mine are quite similar to these. I also chose them because of their look and function. Although sadly I’ve only been wearing 1 pair of socks and should have been wearing two…bye bye big toenails 😦

  18. They sound like brilliant shoes for trekking. The fact that you never felt any discomfort during and after doing 60kms in 4 days definitely makes them a winner! Well done btw, that’s a mammoth effort!

  19. Trekking can be really treacherous sometimes, I too feel it is important to have good gear both for wearing and keeping handy. Shoes, of course, play a major role while on the go. So good piece of information.

  20. I don;t like the sound of those leeches! I’m glad that the shoes protected your legs from them!

I think it’s really hard to grasp whether a boot will be suitable just from trying it in a shop, especially if you’re going to be trekking for 11 hours a day like you did! These boots looks great though. I’m in the market for some new ones at the moment so I will keep these in mind.

  21. Iam using Wildcraft trek boots myself and impressed with the quality. I didn’t get any shoe bite & they were comfortable throughout the trek. It’s complete waterproof too. I recommend wildcraft too

  22. You and your shoes have certainly done some miles there! Quality shoes are essential for when you are hiking through jungles with water and leeches. I am doing some hiking in Switzerland over the summer so these are now at the top of the shopping list!

  23. I can definitely say after reading this that shoes play a big role when you have to do treks, be it easy or difficult. My husband wants to go for trekking, I will ask him to check these shoes as well.

  24. अगर अच्छे है मुझे भी ये वाले लेने पडेंगे। बाइक व पैदल यात्राओं में बहुत काम आयेंगे।
