WHAT IS THE BEST SHOE for trekking? How to identify what shoes should I buy for trekking? These are some of the questions my readers inundate me with, apart from, of course the suggestions for best camera, stay options and destinations. I recently tried Wildcraft’s newly launched Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes. Here is my review of the same.

When PATA, Nepal chapter invited me to International Travel Bloggers and Media Conference, I was asked to choose between Culture or Adventure for Media trips organized by them. I readily chose Adventure. I had not done a real trek after the successful completion of the difficult Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal in October 2015 and the easy day trek to Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan in August 2016. My old trekking shoes had given way and I was contemplating about which shoes I should try next. The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft caught my attention. I shared its details with an adventure sports expert friend of mine and she readily asked me to go for it. I did and here is what I found:

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft is Sturdy and stylish:

The first thing that impresses about the Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes is its bulky and macho appearance. It’s stylish and a head turner. When I went to Wildcraft’s Connaught Place (New Delhi) store, they showed me 2 colors- Brown, Black and Dark Blue. I instantly chose the brown one which complemented the rough terrains I usually trek on. I realized it was a good choice when people later complimented me for the look of the shoe. It’s hard to ignore it.

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft comes with great traction and grip.

I chose Poonhill Trek in Nepal. The terrain is uneven with harsh ascends and descends. On day 2 of the Poonhill trek, I managed to walk 7500 steps, including around 4000 steep stairs, most of it ascending. I trekked for 11 hours on Day 2. On a total I managed to trek upto 60 kms in 4 days. If it was not for the Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes it would have been mammoth task for me. It was still a strenuous trek, made a little easy by the choice of shoes I made. The 6mm thick lugs helped me in ground traction.

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft kept me stable and protected:

During the Poonhill Trek, I trekked on uneven surfaces, often stumbling on loose rocks. I also encountered nasty leeches (on my arms). The design of the shoes perhaps protected my legs from leeches. The tongue and collar of the shoes covered my ankle and beyond. The nylon shank made sure that the shoes didn’t bend on rough surfaces. The rubber toe minimized the impact when legs hit the ground. I have trekked using other shoes and I could see the difference.

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft is waterproof:

The Poonhill Trek was the perfect trek to test the shoes for its claim of being waterproof. On my previous treks I have tried the so called waterproof shoes and was disappointed. The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes delighted me by staying true to its claims. On most of the days during the Poonhill trek, I came across voluptuous water streams and even cattle dung. There was no option but to walk over it on foot. During the Everest Base Camp Trek, I was wearing a popular trekking shoe by other brand. It claimed to be waterproof but on ‘wet days’, I did have to keep my shoes and socks for drying at the end of the day. I was amazed that the Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes didn’t allow a single drop of water to seep in owing to the bellow tongue and waterproof membrane up to 80mm height (first eyelet level)

The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes by Wildcraft is comfortable:

Throughout the 4 days strenuous Poonhill Trek, I never felt any discomfort due to the shoes. It snugly fit in. The CMEVA midsole provided ample cushioning and shock absorption. The moulded insocks kept the shoes anti-microbial. The shoes were also breathable and are thus anti-odour. Despite its bulky size, the shoe doesn’t hamper the trekking experience. In fact the design aids trekking.

The Bottomline:

I have been trekking across India, Nepal and Bhutan since year 2012. During this thrilling journey, I have tried many shoes and trekking gears. The Amphibia Sphere Outdoor Adventure & Trekking Shoes is undoubtedly the best shoe I have tried so far. As a blogger, it is my responsibility to stay true to my readers and give them the right advice. I was thinking hard to find any flaws in the shoes but I failed. The experience at Poonhill Trek and pleasant results of my new shoes are fueling in me the desire to attempt more treks this year. Possibly I will go back to the high altitude treks. (I have done high altitude treks like Everest Base Camp in Nepal and Roopkund trek in Uttarakhand, India)
