But before I could do that <strong>a man yelled at me<\/strong> in excitement, <em>\u201cSafed daadhi, idhar aayiye, aapka ilaaj hai mere paas\u201d<\/em> (Hey, white stubble, come to me. I have the panacea of your woes.\u201d) Confused\/sad\/angry\/befuddled I said my \u2018No Thanks!\u2019 (I love my <strong>salt and pepper beard<\/strong>.) but to no avail. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10797\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10797\" style=\"width: 844px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10797\" src=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/img_3792.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3792\" width=\"844\" height=\"614\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10797\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The locals at Pushkar fair, Rajasthan, India<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>He still persisted and <strong>I laughed out loud when<\/strong> in a <strong>final desperate attempt,<\/strong> he stood up aggressively and yelled, pointing finger to me, <em><strong>\u201cAapko meri kasam!\u201d<\/strong> <\/em>Not knowing what hit me and <strong>visibly flabbergasted,<\/strong> I proceeded towards the main market area. Most of the shops <strong>aimed the local villagers<\/strong> and stocked practical daily use items. After all, Pushkar was originally a <strong>cattle fair.<\/strong> It\u2019s only now that it has become this huge <strong>monster of an event.<\/strong> <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><em>Pics above (L to R) : Rake, hardware, hukkah for sale at Pushkar fair, Rajasthan, India<br \/>\n<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>The other shops are aimed at the <strong>gullible tourists,<\/strong> their eyes wide with all the exotica around. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>The villagers who still come to trade here are unperturbed by the <strong>touristy frills<\/strong> that Pushkar fair breeds. There were options galore to buy. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10806\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10806\" style=\"width: 922px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10806\" src=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/img_3981.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3981\" width=\"922\" height=\"614\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toys reflecting local culture at Pushkar fair, Rajasthan, India<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>Makeshift tents selling cosmetics, clothes, bags, CDs, jewelleries, tools (yes even a screw driver), food, utensils, soft toys, farming equipments, hukkah, animal accessories and other such <strong>cheap knick knacks dotted the streets.<\/strong> You name it, they got it! A whopping INR 700\/- for mud and metal? No dude, thank you very much! Needless to say it was <strong>the \u2018Festival\u2019 price,<\/strong> aimed mainly at <strong>gullible foreigners<\/strong> and well pocketed Delhi travellers. At times, I struggled to recall <a href=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/2016\/12\/16\/travel-gone-wrong-when-i-was-stranded-in-pitch-dark-in-rural-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sad moments<\/a>. I overheard someone saying, <em><strong>\u201cKhabardaar, agar bhaagne ki koshish ki to bandook chala doonga!\u201d<\/strong> <\/em>(Beware! I\u2019ll shoot if you try to run!) I looked left, right, centre to find out from where this threat was coming. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10815\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10815\" src=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/img_5283.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5283\" width=\"614\" height=\"922\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Dhai kilo ka haath<\/strong> <\/em>of Sunny Deol not Sunny Leone. I peeped inside hesitantly and saw some 20 young people seated on the floor and watching a trashy <a href=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/2017\/02\/11\/dhanak-the-film-road-trip-to-rural-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bollywood film <\/a>from the 80s on a huge colour T.V. It was paid and they had regular shows. Outside the tent a <strong>super angry Sunny<\/strong> Deol (Bollywood\u2019s home grown <strong>Sylvester Stallone<\/strong>) in a <a href=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/2016\/03\/26\/303\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sikh turban <\/a>was threatening to hit you hard with his <em><strong>\u2018dhai kilo ka haath\u2019<\/strong> <\/em>(A hand weighing 2 and a half kgs.) Impressive enough! I <strong>rushed to the spot with my camera<\/strong> to where the main action was. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<h2 class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"WHEN_HINDU_GODS_DESCENDED_IN_THE_STADIUM_OF_PUSHKAR_FAIR_RAJASTHAN\"><\/span><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">WHEN HINDU GODS DESCENDED IN THE STADIUM OF PUSHKAR FAIR, RAJASTHAN.<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>Locals dolled up as <strong>Hindu mythological characters<\/strong> and even as <strong>peacocks<\/strong> and other animals and regaled the tourists in the Pushkar fair stadium. <strong>A Hindu carnival<\/strong> of sorts! The scene stealer was <strong>Lord Krishna,<\/strong> who spun a steel plate on his index finger. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10792\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10792\" style=\"width: 922px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10792\" src=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/img_3715.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3715\" width=\"922\" height=\"614\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lord Krishna- Indian Hindu God at Pushkar fair, Rajasthan, India<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>The plate had <a href=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/2017\/04\/26\/incredible-india-tulip-festival-in-srinagar-kashmir-is-second-only-to-tulip-garden-of-holland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flowers<\/a> and it showered on the unsuspecting tourists as he spun it. The <strong>\u2018Lord Shiva\u2019<\/strong> on the other hand, played with his <em><strong>damru<\/strong> <\/em>as his pet <a href=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/2017\/09\/21\/in-search-of-king-cobra-in-agumbe-rainforests-with-the-i-travel-group-the-wettest-place-in-south-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">snake<\/a> (dummy) rested on his neck. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\"><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10789\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10789\" style=\"width: 922px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10789\" src=\"http:\/\/asoulwindow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/img_3708.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3708\" width=\"922\" height=\"614\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10789\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The famous Rajasthani dancer and his team. I instantly recognised him maybe because he wore same outfits and make up. The tunes and the enthusiasm of the dancer is such that even a non dancer will be hypnotised to dance. While some of the activities were organised and were available on the festival calendar, many were <strong>impromptou gigs<\/strong> by the local talent. And of course, the <strong>\u2018ramp walk\u2019<\/strong> on the tight rope.
