Information about Rajdari Devdari Aurwatand Waterfalls near Varanasi

Rajdari Devdari Aurwatand Waterfalls near Varanasi are a known secret of Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh. There is small wonder then that these waterfalls near Varanasi are already very popular with those who know about it!

Surprisingly, despite its lack of global fame, these waterfalls near Varanasi are some of the grandest and largest I had seen in India. The cascading silvery water amidst lush green surroundings rejuvenated me and were like balm to my naked eyes. Do not miss these major sightseeing attractions around Varanasi.

This exhaustive is packed with information on Rajdari Devdari waterfalls with a bonus section on Naugarh dam, Aurwatand waterfall and canyons. The deep insight I have shared in this travelogue is based on my own personal visit to Chandauli near Varanasi. Here is why ecotourism circuit in the Vindhyas deserves your attention.

My Experience at the Rajdari Devdari waterfalls

I was born in Varanasi and lived all my life in several cities of Uttar Pradesh such as Kanpur, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Ghaziabad etc. (Apart from 7 years in Navi Mumbai, of course!). I am a travel enthusiast and keep searching for new places. Little idea did I have that something so gorgeous existed in my backyard.

Saying that Rajdari, Devdari and Aurwatand Waterfalls took my breath away is an understatement. I could have never imagined rugged mountainous terrains, cliffs, ravines, deep valleys, rocky outcrops and gushing waterfalls in Uttar Pradesh, my home-state. This Varanasi trip was a revelation.

The surreal sight of crystal-clear waters of all three waterfalls, gurgling over the craggy rocks reminded me of Grand Canyon of United States of America. The rugged cliffs, wide open spaces, raw and untamed surroundings made me rub my eyes. I had never seen anything like this before. Neither did I have any idea that something like this existed near Varanasi, also known as Kashi or Banaras. Visiting such breath-taking waterfalls in the middle of nowhere was surely the highlight of my Varanasi trip.

I noticed so many tourists already enjoying in Rajdari waterfalls when we arrived because it is a major picnic spot for the locals of Varanasi and nearby cities such as Jaunpur.

People are attracted by the sheer beauty of the place. Since U.P. is my home state, I wanted to change that through this detailed guide on Rajdari Devdari waterfalls with a bonus feature on the nearby Aurwatand canyon and Waterfalls.

The beauty of the grand canyons which were formed over several centuries of erosion by water and wind is hard to explain in words, pictures and videos. These are some of the best offbeat places to visit near Varanasi or Banaras. During my visit, I observed that this untouched region near Varanasi has tremendous potential for further development of tourism. Several efforts to make eco-tourism here a reality can already be seen. The areas around areas of Chandauli, Sonebhadra, Mirzapur and Ghazipur district can turn into a tourist magnet if things work as planned.

Below is all you wanted to know about the tourist attractions of Rajdari Devdari.

Nomenclature/Etymology of Rajdari Devdari waterfalls

Some people addressRajdari Devdari Aurwatand Waterfalls as Niagra Fall of India or Grand Canyon of India, which I feel is not right. Every place has a beauty of its own which should not be demeaned by comparisons. Rajdari Devdari Waterfalls are also often called as Rajdari Devdari Jal Prapat or ‘heaven of Poorvanchal’ locally.

Where is Rajdari Devdari waterfalls located?

Where is Rajdari located? Where is Devdari waterfall? These are some frequently asked questions. The Rajdari and Devdari waterfalls are located within the lush green Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary. The best part is that these beautiful waterfalls are located only one to two hours away from Varanasi. I was born in Varanasi (in 1982) and grew up in various cities of Uttar Pradesh and I still had no idea that such hilly terrains are located right next to Varanasi. Surrounded by the Vindhya range of mountains, it is a sight to behold!

History of Rajdari Devdari waterfalls

Historical significance of the region of Rajdari Devdari waterfalls is worth writing home about. Did you know that the serial Chandrakanta was based on the region around these waterfalls. We can still visit the ruins of Vijaygarh fort and Naugarh fort even today. The legendary novel called as Chandrakanta Santati was penned by the renowned writer Shri Devkinandan Khatri.

The immortal love-story between Virendra Singh, the prince of Naugarh and Chandrakanta, the princess of Vijaygarh was set in this very backdrop. I grew up watching the T.V. show which talked about a magical world of aiyyars, fantasy and what not. It was the ‘Harry Potter’ of my childhood.

Several related places as shown in the novel and the T.V. show can still be visited in the Sonabhadra, Robertsganj and Chandauli district. The ruins of Vijaygarh fort and Naugarh fort are one of them. Chandrakanta ecotourism circuit is already popular here as I noticed a large crowd of tourists at what I felt was obscure, the Chunar Fort, that is.

Rajdari waterfalls

Rajdari waterfall is one of the best places to see near Varanasi or Banaras. It makes for a great weekend escape for the students of B.H.U. and other colleges and families of Varanasi. Rajdari waterfall had me agape mouthed the moment I had its first glimpse.

I rushed down the few staircases which led to the viewing platform. This viewing deck was built so that tourists could enjoy the grand views of the Rajdari waterfallwithout risking their lives.Proper railings have been built for the safety of tourists here.

The mere sight of frothy, milky water cascading down naturally stepped rocky surfaces left me speechless.  The water would finally drop in a huge reservoir and vanish behind the dense green trees. I wondered how much more beauty remained to be seen behind the green cover. This hidden gem near Varanasi is an unexplored place, located far away from the crowds.

I wondered why I travelled to far-away places when such visually stunning canyons and wateraflls existed right in my backyard. Being a native of Uttar Pradesh, I felt a sense of pride showing such places to my co-travellers who were travel bloggers and instagrammars from various parts of India.

Devdari waterfall

Much like Rajdari waterfall, I had little idea about existence of Devdari waterfall either. Somehow mainstream media and old school travel guide books never wrote about these places. This is why I decided to write this detailed blog on Rajdari Devdari waterfall.

Devdari falls near Varanasi or Banaras
Devdari falls near Varanasi or Banaras

How come I had no idea that it ever existed, I questioned myself. Something so gorgeous, virgin and visually spectacular is located just 1-2 hours away from Varanasi and no one knows about it.

Devdari waterfall is indeed one of the best places to visit near Varanasi, which very few people know about. Visiting places such as Devdari waterfall is going off the beaten track in its truest sense. To sum it up, it is the top top place to visit near Varanasi.

Aurwatand canyon and waterfalls

Very few people have ever visited Aurwatand canyon and waterfalls. It is the best kept secret of Uttar Pradesh. Most tourists visit only Rajdari Devdari waterfall and return. Aurawatand is ‘seriously’ off the touristy trail. This lesser-known place near Varanasi is unheard-of. Such amazing points of attractions near Varanasi merits more attention than it gets. This lesser-visited place is the best kept secret of Varanasi.

The moment our mini-bus stopped at the wild bushes near Aurwatand canyon, I was wide eyed with what I saw. “Am I in Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh?”, I pinched myself. I had not even heard of anything like this existing in my home-state Uttar Pradesh. Such landscapes are more commonly seen in areas like Chambal or other mountainous terrains of Madhya Pradesh. To think of something like this, situated only 1-2 hours from Varanasi was beyond my imagination.

The sight of frothy water dramatically dropping from rocky cliffs was awe inspiring. The canvas of nature is indeed grander than we think. My eyes scanned the surrounding areas. Till as far as I could see. Kilometers of green patches interspersed with rocky terrains had me agape mouthed. The last time I had seen something like was in the Dhuandhar falls near Jabalpur and the several waterfalls of Maharashtra.

Aurwatand is a must-see place, especially for those who like to go off the beaten track. Being a quick and easy weekend destination from Varanasi, I am not sure why more people have not discovered it yet! Visit here in peace, before an army of reel makers camps here! Here is a tip: A visit to the forests of Chakia-Naugrarh hill belt during the rainy season is a sensory delight. Make it happen!

Prehistoric Art at Aurwatand canyon and waterfalls

Just as I was leaving Aurwatand, Lakshmi ma’am asked me if I saw the prehistoric paintings? “What? Where?”, I asked surprised. “There….under that rock.”, she said. Everyone was leaving, and since we were a huge group, I rushed with my co-traveller Harsh towards the rock for a quick appreciation of what was painted here thousands of years ago.

I was initially unable to spot the prehistoric paintings. It was then that Harsh pointed out to the paintings which were right in front of my eyes. I was spellbound when I had my first glimpse of the prehistoric paintings. How old were they? Probably 30,000 or 40,000 years old. Aurwatand and the wonders around it are still not well documented. These rock paintings throw interesting light on the lifestyle, ways and art of Early Man in the Chandauli region.

What amazed me the most was that the ancient rock paintings were so well preserved. The colour of the paintings was deep red and looked like someone made it just yesterday. I noticed some scens of hunting depicted on the rocks. Though, the quantity and scale of ancient rock painting and shelter of Aurwatand was not as big as that of Bhimbetka site, but it was still a significant site. I have been born and raised in Uttar Pradesh all my life and I had never heard of any prehistoric cave art existing in my home-state ever.

The cave paintings of nearby Sonbhadra, also in Uttar Pradesh is also a major site where we can see prehistoric cave art. The ancient art here includes brilliant depiction of scenes of festivals, hunting, wild animals, war, dance and even romantic life.

Prehistoric Shelter at Aurwatand

I stood near the prehistoric cave art on the rocks, in silence, imagining what it would have been like several thousands of years ago. The art was so well-preserved because it was covered with huge rocky outcrops which shielded it from elements of nature.

This also is the place where the hunter gatherers of early age must have sought shelter. “Isn’t it the most premium real estate one can think of? Waterfall facing! Canyon Facing! Greenery all around!”, I wondered. Come to think of it! The early men and women must have slept here under the star, braved cold winds and mosquitoes and painted those cave art which lasted thousands of years.

Soul Window Observations

The prehistoric cave paintings of Aurawatand reminded me of the shelters and prehistoric rock paintings I saw in the more famous Bhimbhetka of Madhya Pradesh in Central India and Singhanpur Caves near Raigarh in Chattisgarh during Chakradhar Samaroh.

Another ancient rock art I observed was the rock art of Lakhudiyar Caves which are located in the Barechhina village above the banks of the lesser-known Suyal River in Almora, Uttarakhand.

Mysterious Caves near canyon and waterfalls

If you look closely, you will notice several mysterious caves in the craggy hills and canyons that host these grand waterfalls. It is said that several local people and even the men from paramilitary tried to enter these enigmatic caves with no success.

As per the local folklore, it is said that using these caves, Kings of yesteryears and their army men used to move from one place to another. Their secret agents also used the caves to visit other territories and get themselves an update of what’s happening on the other side. It is also believed that the spies used to even kill the enemies using the access which these caves provide.

It is said that even today, we can see proofs of these caves in the forts of Vijaygarh and Naugarh. However, the forest department has closed most of these mysterious caves. Few years ago, the then Assistant Commandant of CRPF, Shri Ganesh Pratap Singh along with army men, used ropes to see what lies inside these caves near Rajdari waterfall.

However, since the cave was too long and dark, the officer returned back after walking a few steps. Even before him, many officers have tried to enter the caves with limited or no success.

Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary

Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary is the oldest wildlife sanctuary of Uttar Pradesh. Chandraprabha dam is also located here.

Today most of the tourists visit Chandra Prabha Wildlife sanctuary to get access to the twin Rajdari and Devdari waterfalls. However, it is essentially a safe haven for many wild animals, birds, reptiles, insects and amphibians. Teeming with life, which is not always visible easily. Chandraprabha Wildlife sanctuary is a lesser-known biodiversity hotspot of Uttar Pradesh.

Not many people know that the main objective to establish the Chandraprabha Wildlifesanctuary near Varanasi in the year 1957 was to conserve the endangered Asiatic lions. Since it was a suitable habitat, as many as 2 Asiatic lions were introduced in the Chandraprabha Wildlife sanctuary in the year 1957. However, there are no lions here at present. After the year 1970, no record of lions in these forests were found.

Having said that, there are still many species of wild animals and exotic birds which call Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary home.

Some of the wild animals found in Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary are

  • Deer
  • Chital
  • Hyena
  • Langur
  • Sambar
  • Chinkara
  • Leopards
  • Wild Boar
  • Porcupine
  • Blackbucks
  • Indian Gazelle
  • Rhesus monkey
  • Neel gai or blue ox

The natural forest of Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Kaimur (or Kymore) Forest range of Vindhya Mountain Range between Naugarh and Vijaygarh.

Chandraprabha River

Chandraprabha River, which is a tributary of the Karmnasa River, flows through the Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary. Karmnasa River itself is a tributary of the holy Ganga River. There are several big and small waterfalls located around both Karmnasa River as well as Chandraprabha River.

Naugarh Dam

Just before we reached Aurwatand waterfall and canyon, I noticed the imposing Naugarh Dam. Tourists can also stop here for a while either when they are approaching Aurwatand waterfall or leaving from there. The views from Naugarh Dam are equally stunning and worth stopping for. You can take a free walking tour here. The rocks here can be very slippery in monsoon, so be watchful.

The source of the water is through the Chandraprabha River.  The dam which is located just before the waterfall, controls the amount of water which is released. This is why, I request you to be careful about the sudden increase in the flow of the water flow. Thanks to the sudden unalarmed release of water from the dam, the surrounding areas can overflow with water.

Therefore, do not cross the river stream because while coming back, there is a high possibility that due to the increased water levels, you may end up being stuck there with no help in sight.

Tribal Village Walk around Devdari Aurwatand Rajdari waterfalls

I saw several picture postcard perfect villages in the middle of nowhere as our entourage approached Rajdari Devdari waterfalls. If you have some extra time, then I highly recommend that you walk around some of the idyllic villages here.

The construction style of hut, beautiful doors, lack of crowd, pollution free surroundings and the organic local way of living attracted me the most about the villages that surrounded Rajdari Devdari Aurwatand waterfalls. Tribal Village Tour is one of the top things to do near Rajdari Devdari Aurwatand waterfalls.

Rainbow spotting in Rajdari Devdari Waterfalls near Varanasi

As is common with many waterfalls of India, you can also see rainbows forming over the waterfall on a lucky day. Many tourists have claimed to see rainbow over the Rajdari Devdari Waterfalls near Varanasi. You can try your luck as well.

Machan or water tower in Devdari waterfall near Varanasi
Machan or water tower in Devdari waterfall near Varanasi

Machan or Viewing Platform

The best part is that there is a well demarcated viewing platform, watch tower or machan at both Rajdari and Devdari waterfalls respectively.

Rajdari waterfalls: The huge viewing platform of Rajdari waterfalls offers spectacular views of the water gushing in a stepped manner. We were able to enjoy the bounty of nature from a safe distance without getting wet. Some miscreants and hooligans try to cross the boundary and have a bath under the dangerous waterfall. Do not attempt that. It is not safe. Watch respectfully from a distance instead.

Soul Window Travel Tips

Here is my secret tip. I noticed 2-3 more viewing decks around Rajdari waterfalls. Each viewing platform offers a unique perspective and a different vantage point for photography. For example, I noticed a platform right at the tip of where the water drops dramatically in the reservoir below. This view is very different from the view which I enjoyed.

We didn’t have the time to visit all the viewing platforms but if you have ample time, do make an attempt to enjoy the views of Rajdari falls from every possible angle. It is worth it!

Devdari waterfall: We were delighted to see a cemented machan or watch tower at the Devdari waterfall. Though it is small in size but offers breath-taking views of the canyon and the waterfall in far distance. We were lucky that we had entire machan to ourselves. We had to take some stairs to get on the top of this watch tower or machan.

Aurwatand canyon and waterfall: On the other hand, the Aurwatand canyon and waterfall is still very wild, raw and untamed. There are no railings here, neither is there any viewing platform or machan here. Therefore, it is very important to be cautious when visiting Aurwatand. Always watch the beauty of Auwatand from a safe distance and do not get too close. Take special care when traveling with differently abled, kids and old people.

You can still enjoy amazing views of the canyon and waterfalls from the top of the rocks on the left side of the Aurwatand site. The best panoramic views can be enjoyed from here.

Excursions from Rajdari Devdari waterfalls

Before visiting the waterfalls, on the same day we started our excursion from Varanasi with some obscure places. I had never heard of Chunar Fort though when I told my father about it, he said that he had visited it long ago. The Chunar Fort was originally constructed in the year 56 B.C.E. by the famous Raja Vikramaditya. The stories of T.V. show Chandrakanta also come alive here.

The views of the holy river, Maa Ganga from the Chunar Fort are some of the best I have seen till date. We also saw a huge well and an underground prison in the fort premises. It was followed by our visit to a colonial building, located right next to the Chunar Fort. The views of Ganga River and the Chunar Bridge from here are astounding, to say the least. There were few bed rooms, living rooms and two toilets in this colonial building.

Next, we visited another colonial building which was once the house of Warren Hastings. It is located a little away from the Chunar Fort. We could have also walked till here but chose to drive to this monument due to lack of time. It is located in secluded place, so I advise to always visit this place with a company. The rooms were locked when we visited.

A sun dial from the bygone era piqued my curiosity. In an era when watched were not commonplace, privileged people used these sun dials to keep a track of time. You can see this sun-dial towards the left of the house of Warren Hastings. Entry here is free.

You can also visit Chandrakanta van vishram grih or the forest rest house, which once was also the resting quarter of ‘Kashi Naresh’ or King of Kashi. Chandrakanta van vishram grih is located merely 18 kilometres away from Rajdari-Devdari waterafalls. It is a fort located in the Naugarh region along the Karmanasa River.

The Salkhan fossil park in Robertsganj near Rajdari Devdari is also a must-see place. It is a top top place to see near Varanasi. This place is a whooping 1,400 million years old. This fossil park is located only 25 kilometres away from the Vijaygarh fort. The 400 feet tall imposing Vijaygarh fort itself is a major tourist attraction in this region.

Constructed by a Kol King in the Maukalan village of Sonabhadra in 5th century C.E., Vijaygarh Fort is a major sightseeing place in this region. Located only 40 kilometres away from the Chandrakanta Forest rest house, it boasts of several interesting features such as a large water reservoir or pond towards its back.

There are many more interesting places around Varanasi which you can visit. Some of the best places to see near Rajdari Devdari waterfalls are

There are not many eating options in and around Rajdari Devdari Aurwatand waterfalls. Aurwatand waterfall is completely raw and is bereft of any modern frills you may fancy. While Rajdhari and Devdari waterfalls have better facilities but food can still be an issue.

I didn’t see many eateries here which serve snacks and drinks which is justified due to its remote location. I recommend that you carry small snacks and sufficient water bottles before you leave Varanasi. If you are a local of Varanasi, try to bring some comforting home-made food. For lunch or dinner, some road side dhabas and resorts near Rajdhari and Devdari waterfalls offer complete healthy meals.

Soul Window Travel Tip

It is sufficient to spend at least 1 to 2 hours at one waterfall if you want to enjoy without rushing from one spot to another. My personal tip is that you should bring in packed breakfast and lunch so that you can enjoy a meal while looking at the grand views of the waterfalls.

Eating inside a room or resort is a waste of time when you can do it out in the open. However, make sure you take back the trash which you generate. Leaving behind chips packet and cold drinks are a big no-no! Virgin and untouched places like these should be preserved for posterity.

Rajdhari Resort

You can also stay in Rajdhari Resort which is spread across a vast area. Despite lacking the finesse of the resorts in bigger cities, they live up to their name, ‘The perfect holiday destination.’ The charm of a rural setting, large individual cottages and a secluded location makes Rajdhari Resort outstanding.

I sat on an old fashioned charpai in a huge lawn, as the local singers and musicians played soul stirring Bhojpuri songs one after another.

Soul Window Ruminations

Being a resident of Uttar Pradesh, I have always maintained that the original Bhojpuri songs are way more meaningful, deeper and even fun than what the more visible Bhojpuri movie industry will want us to believe.

Hijacked by vulgar songs and dances, the real soulful Bhojpuri culture and performing arts have been relegated to obscurity systematically, as if in a desperation to prove the prophecies about Kaliyug told millenniums ago.

It was therefore, heartening for me to see that the Rajdari resort owners made a conscious effort to showcase the real soul of Uttar Pradesh to its guests through its soulful music and songs told in a rustic setting, which very few people get the chance to experience these days!

I had a quick tour of Rajdari Resort. I liked how big its cottages were with a large sit-out area. In far distance, I could see rural homes of people, tall trees, farms and a thin layer of fog suspended in the air, as if by magic!

We had tasty and healthy food in the al fresco buffet of Rajdari Resort. The menu included roti, mixed vegetable, a paneer dish, salad, daal, rice etc. To be able to eat our food on charpai under the sky as the sun sets, is an experience in itself.

On request, Rajdari Resort also arranges various activities such as trekking, hiking, camping, cycling, tribal village walks, tours to forts and prehistoric rock art, jungle safari, visit to dams, waterfalls and even nearby ashrams.

It is hard for a city dweller like me to believe that something as serene as Rajdari Resort is located only 1.5 hours of a smooth drive from Banaras or Varanasi. Who would have thought?

What to wear in Rajdari Devdari waterfalls

Despite the sheer force of water at both the waterfalls, the water never showered on me. Unlike many other famous waterfalls such as waterfalls of Maharashtra, Niagara Falls, waterfalls of Indonesia, you don’t need to wear raincoats to be able to enjoy the grand scenery.

Much like the Jog falls of Karnataka in South India or Thosegar waterfall in Satara of Maharashtra, you can enjoy the beauty of Aurwatand, Rajdari and Devdari falls from a safe distance.

If visiting these falls in winter, always carry a jacket or windcheater with you at all times even if it didn’t feel very cold when you left Varanasi. Weather can change suddenly and you may end up looking for warm clothes desperately.
