Benog Wildlife Sanctuary In Mussoorie – A Perfect Place For Families Who Love Nature And Wildlife
If you are a nature lover, you would agree with the words of Frank Lloyd Wright – “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you”. While there are plenty of places in India that bring you close to the wonders of nature, few come close to Mussoorie -‘Queen of Hill Stations’.
A beautiful town with picturesque views of snow-laden mountains, there are plenty of places to visit in Mussoorie that are ideal for families, groups of friends and solo travellers. The expansive greenery of tall pines, cedar, birch, oak, rhododendron and deodar trees adds a misty fragrance to the air here. Close your eyes to submit yourself to the freshness of nature around and get away from the hustle bustle of your city life.
While there are several popular places here that draw travellers from all over the country and world, Benog Wildlife Sanctuary tops the list of Mussoorie sightseeing spots for wildlife enthusiasts.
The Benog Wildlife Sanctuary, located around 11 km away from the Library point in Mussoorie, can easily be accessed by road. Part of the renowned Rajaji National Park, this nature reserve is a haven for bird lovers as it is home to many rare species of birds. Here you can spot birds like the almost-extinct mountain quails, White Capped Water Redstart and Red Billed Blue Magpie, amongst others.
Another reason that Benog Wildlife Sanctuary thrills nature lovers is because it plays host to rare breeds of deer and leopards, along with panthers, bears, and the Himalayan Goat. In addition to this, it is rich in flora and fauna. Here you can find numerous medicinal plants, making it an exciting place for those who are interested in Ayurvedic and natural treatments.
However, that is not all that Benog Wildlife Sanctuary has to offer. It is also one of the most renowned places to visit in Mussoorie for trekking. The routes from Park Estate and Cloud’s End, which are almost 2 km on foot are favourite, and make an excellent choice for a hike through nature with the family.
Considering the climatic conditions, the best time to visit Benog Wildlife Sanctuary is during the summers as the temperatures range from a minimum of 20 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius. The bright summer skies are perfect for spotting birds, clicking pictures and enjoying spectacular views of the snow-laden Chaukhamba and Bandarpunch peaks. The weather in the winter, however, can dip to sub-zero levels, and also leads to dense fog and heavy snow, which would make bird-watching practically impossible.
The reserve is open from 5.00 am till 4.00 p.m. It usually takes not more than two to three hours to complete a visit to the sanctuary and this can be done according to your leisure.
To make your trip to Benog Wildlife Sanctuary even more memorable, opt for a stay at Club Mahindra Resort in Mussoorie, where you can indulge in breath-taking views of the surroundings.
