A Travel Guide To Jaipur,
India’s City of Palaces
Jaipur is a city that has a glorious past. Home to many palaces, forts and temples, the city should be on every traveller’s list of must-visit places in India. There are many sites to see in Jaipur and if you love architecture, there is a lot of opportunity to walk through artfully designed structures such as carved walls, intricately decorated windows and stately moats. I have been to Jaipur 3 times. My experience was so nice that I wouldn’t mind another repeat. Here is my travel guide to Jaipur.
Travel Guide to Jaipur
1. Visit Amer Fort (Amber Fort)
Every time I am in Jaipur, the stunning palaces of Jaipur make me lose track of time. I can explore the palaces of Jaipur all day! Amer or Amber Fort is my favorite! It sits on the top of a hill near Maota Lake. The fort was once the home of the kings, until it was vacated when the Rajput capital shifted to Jaipur. Despite the fort lying in ruins, it is still an amazing site to visit. The gardens and temples inside the fort are beautiful and at a few places, you will find stunning artwork on walls, meshed windows and beautiful domes at the top of the fort. One can get to the top of the fort on a jeep.
- Location: Delhi Road
- Sites to See: Shila Devi Temple, Diwan-i-Am, Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors)
2. Enjoy Jaipur’s Skyline From the
Hawa Mahal
At Hawa Mahal, one can relive Jaipur’s glorious past and also catch glimpses of the city and its beautiful attractions from inside the structure. Added benefits of visiting the Hawa Mahal as a tourist is that the palace is an excellent place to click delightful photographs. Those who are interested in the palace’s history can take a guided tour for a reasonable fee, with qualified tour guides available outside the palace.
- Location: Sireh Deorhi Bazaar
- Sites to See: Peep out of a jharokha (window) to enjoy the cool breeze and soak in stunning views of the city.

3. Watch a Film at the
Rajmandir Movie Theatre
While in Jaipur, tourists should not miss out on watching a movie at the iconic Raj Mandir Theatre. The theatre is built in Art Deco style and the atmosphere inside the theatre during a Hindi film is something quite amazing. Film buffs shout, clap and participate wholeheartedly during the film screening. For First-Day-First-Show films, you might want to book tickets in advance.

4. Witness the Gangaur Festival
Gangaur Festival is held each year around the same time as the festival of Holi. It is believed to be a celebration of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva’s union. Usually held between the months of March and April, the festival is a celebration of Rajasthani culture and colour. On the streets of Jaipur, you’ll find local musicians performing folk music, dancers moving to the beats of traditional music and a host of other cultural programs. Visit during the months of March and April to enjoy and soak in Rajasthan’s rich culture.
- Location: All Over The City
- Held During: March & April
5. Jal Mahal –
The floating palace in a lake.
There is no way you can miss Jal Mahal. With astounding views of Nahargarh hills and Man Sagar lake, it looks stunning, especially in night. Though you are not allowed inside the palace but you can soak in the views from the adjoining promenade. The architectural style is a melange of Rajput and Mughal styles.
6. Watch the Sunset From
The Nahargarh Fort
The Nahargarh Fort overlooks Jaipur and, from the top of the fort, you can behold stunning views of the city. It is also a good place to click landscape photographs and watch the sunset in the evening. Post sunset, stay back at the fort for a sound and light show that teaches you all about Nahargarh Fort’s glorious past.

It is a huge complex consisting temples, manicured lawns, sprawling courtyards, museums, touristy souvenir shops etc. To this date the descendents of royal family live in one section of City Palace called Chandra Mahal. It is ticketed and open from 9:30 am to 5 pm.
8. Gaze at the Stars
One of the coolest sites to visit in Jaipur is the Jantar Mantar. At the site you will see many instruments and structures designed to measure the heavens and the stars. Spend the whole morning learning about how the instruments work. For the best experience, book a guided tour – guides are available near the ticket counter.
