IT HAPPENED IN CALCUTTA – A PERIOD DRAMA LIKE NO OTHER
Since I am spending a lot of time at home and not traveling anywhere at the moment, I am releasing the itch to travel vicariously these days. I am reading travel books, watching documentaries and even watching Bollywood movies where the city masquerades as one of the characters in the plot. One such web series I am watching currently is IT HAPPENED IN CALCUTTA.
THE PERIOD DRAMA WITH FEW PARELLELS – WEB SERIES INDIA
It Happened In Calcutta, the web series I am currently watching, is not necessarily a travel movie, and yet it transported me to the lanes and cityscapes of Calcutta, so full of life and character. What makes it even more exciting to watch It Happened In Calcutta is that this riveting period drama is set in the Kolkata of the 60s, when it was called Calcutta.
Kudos to the art director, costumes designer, dialogues writer and not to forget, the hair dresser, all of whom magically recreated the Calcutta of 60s effortlessly. The web series shows the best of retro Calcutta, the frames of which are punctuated with scenes from the legendary Moulin Rouge, the iconic Victoria Memorial and Howrah Bridge etc. It brought back memories of my own travel to what is now Kolkata. I yearned to travel again to Calcutta after watching the web series, all thanks to the beautifully shot web series. The brilliant cinematography is another cherry on the cake! No second thoughts on that.
It is a Calcutta you would want to travel back to. As an avid traveler, I had always been curious to travel back in time to get a feel of how a particular city must have felt like in a certain era. While that is yet not possible, watching a period drama is. And what better than ‘It Happened In Calcutta.’ Web Series India to watch out for! This original ZEE5 web series is like anything you have watched on web yet!
THE PLOT OF IT HAPPENED IN CALCUTTA – WEB SERIES INDIA
It is a socio-political drama with a major dose of culture thrown in. Kusum, an ambitious young girl and an aspiring doctor is the main female protagonist of the web series. Upon her admission as the only female in the M.B.B.S. course in Calcutta Medical College, she enters a new phase of her life. She meets Ronobir, an arrogant and privileged man here and eventually falls for him.
Though, all is not hunky dory here. A string of events such as a deadly Cholera outbreak, tensions between India and Pakistan and political unrest influence their undying love for each other. Will they pass the test of time?
WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT HAPPENED IN CALCUTTA?
I have been reviewing Hindi movies since the year 2000 (exact 20 years, phew!), but very rarely have I seen a web series like It Happened In Calcutta. Not only is it a visual delight but the strong story line and powerful dialogues made me stay glued to my seat. It is a well crafted film where attention is given to every details you can think of. It has got both – style and substance!
The team has done an incredible job of recreating a bygone era and doing full justice to the Calcutta of the 60s. If you do not believe me, see the trailer yourself.
THE TEAM OF IT HAPPENED IN CALCUTTA –
It happened In Calcutta is directed by the famous Ken Ghosh and stars Karan Kundrra and Naghma Rizwan in main leads.
The nuanced performance of the main lead is one of the strengths of the web series. Not only do they have exceptional screen presence but they also score well on dialogue delivery and expressions.
Ken Ghosh, being the seasoned director that he is delivers a masterpiece. It is not a travel film but it still takes you to a time zone you didn’t know existed. You can watch it now at ALTBalaji. Thank me later!
